HOW TO CHOOSE A PUTTER
by Golf Manager, Mic Walsh
Golf equipment is being made to exact measurements, and balances better and better all the time. The putter is no different. The new styles of putters are more balanced than ever. Counter balancing in the handle has added a new dimension, and larger grips are very helpful for people that have trouble over short putts. They cut down wrist movement and keep the blade of the putter online longer through the stroke.
So, what kind of putter do you need? There are 3 different variations of putter head.
The first style is the blade putter. The blade is a heavy toe weighted style with limited alignment. This means it is suitable for the better putter. The heavier toe is to prevent the blade from closing too much at impact and pulling putts.
The second style is the mallet. Mallet putters are like a blade in the way they are weighted, but are broader and have a little more alignment to them. This tends to help the person who putts well, but misses a few more short putts than they should.
The last style is the alignment putter. Alignment putters are the most advanced putter style in terms of their ability to be balanced. They are large in the head, long in the alignment lines and usually weighted to correct imbalances in putting strokes. This is the style of putter you should look at buying if your putting is not as good as it should be.
The style to suit you might not be the style you want to use, but that’s okay. There really is no right and wrong with putters. They are as individual as the people who swing them. The whole idea is to find one you love and that gives you the confidence to sink putts. After all, putting makes up about 40% of most golfers’ total score. It pays to get it right.
For more advice on putters and putting, we have a practice putting green in store, so you try before you buy and get expert advice to help get the right putter into your bag.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT GOLF BALL
Golf Manager, Mic Walsh
Different golf balls are made very different ways to do very different things.
The basic golf ball on the market is a two piece distance ball. This is basically a hard centre and a hard cover. The idea behind the distance ball is to create as little spin as possible and cover as much distance as possible. This golf ball, being harder, jumps off the clubface very quickly so has less time on the grooves to impart spin. The result is a straighter longer flight that has trouble stopping around the greens. Best suited to the 25+ handicap.
The next type of golf ball is the low compression ball. These golf balls are designed to go further for a slower swing. The ball will compress more and actually spring off the clubface more. It therefore creates more speed off the clubface and flies longer. Best suited to slow swing speeds.
Then we have our intermediate golf ball. These are a combination of the distance ball and the tour ball. There is usually a hard core to the ball that creates higher ball speed off the clubface, but at the same time the manufacturers create a softer cover so it spends a little more time on the clubface generating spin. Best suited to the 14-24 handicap.
Last but not least there is the tour ball. The tour ball has the most technology put into it as it is usually used by the professionals on tour. They try to create the softest cover on the outside of the ball. This makes the ball spend more time on the clubface and travel up the club on contact to generate as much spin as possible. It will create more spin, but not always good spin. More backspin is what people are after, but if it is not hit correctly; more side spin will also be made, sending your golf ball off into the trees. Best suited to the scratch-13 handicap.
If you are after a recommendation on a good golf ball that suits just about every golfer, the new Callaway Chrome Soft is a great place to start. It offers something to just about every type of golfer. Great low spin off the tee, low compression for extra distance, and a tour soft cover for incredible spin and control around the greens.
Normally $49.99 at most retail outlets, we are selling this amazing golf ball at $44 a dozen, $42 for Smart Card members.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR GOLF DRIVER
by Mic Walsh, Golf Manager
When it comes to choosing a driver for golf, there are so many choices out there that it can become confusing. Here is a simple guide to help you get the right club for your swing.
Just about every company will do 2 different golf drivers in their range. One for the low handicapper, and one for the high handicapper.
Low handicap golf drivers are designed for shot shaping. They are usually higher in the face and will allow the better player to shape the ball left or right as they see fit. Being higher in the face, they have less width to the head so they are less forgiving.
High handicap golf drivers will be lower in the height of the clubs crown, but wider. This means the ‘sweet spot’ of the club is bigger and the consistency of the drives will be better.
First, choose the driver that you think is right for you. If you just want to hit straight drives, then the wider head club may be for you. If you want to shot shape your drives, the smaller head will help.
Secondly, choose the company you are most confident in. So much of golf is played between the ears, and a confident golfer is usually a good golfer. If you are confident with the company and confident you have the right club in your hands, you will hit better drives.
There are of course subtle differences between all golf drivers. If you need help figuring out which company, which model and which shape you need to buy, visit us in store at Moorabbin and let our golf experts take you through the options. We have a hitting net where we can put you through your paces and get the right driver to suit your swing.
This month we are having a special on re-gripping. Winter is notorious for slippery worn grips, so come in and take advantage of the Winter Special of a standard re-grip for only $5 per club. We also have many more grips to choose from and all prices include fitting.

FOOTBALLS: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?
Footballs can range in price from $10 to $180. With such a large range of balls to choose from, Gerrard Woods (Director, Sportsmart) explains the main differences.
There are 3 main types of material generally used when making the outer of a ball. This plays the largest role in what use the ball is recommended for.
PVC – Recreational/Junior Training
PVC is the cheapest material used to make balls. Balls made from PVC are recommended for recreational use (backyard, etc) or early years junior training. These balls perform better in the warmer conditions of summer than in wetter, winter conditions.
TPU – Training/Junior Match Balls (under 12 & below)
TPU is a light and extremely flexible material that can be used in soccer balls. TPU is often combined with a foam layer, giving the ball a softer touch. The softer touch helps player control of the ball and helps gives junior players confidence with the ball (especially when heading).
Robust in Melbourne’s winter conditions, TPU balls are great training balls for all levels, and junior level match balls.
PU – Match Balls
Premium level balls are usually made from a PU material for the outer. These balls have a true feel and touch, and retain their shape better during play due to the thicker material. These balls are either hand-stitched or constructed using advanced technology such as thermal bonding.
Balls of this level also can carry international recognised certifications as to quality such as FIFA™ Approved, FIFA™ Inspected or International Match Ball Standard. Balls carrying these certifications must pass mandatory quality standards with regard to shape, shape retention, bounce, weight, etc.
These balls are recommended for all level matches, especially seniors, with internationally certified balls recommended for use in Senior NPL codes in Victoria.
Sportsmart is the official Retail Partner of Football Federation Victoria and offers great deals on balls to all football clubs around Australia.

4 STEPS TO CHOOSING A TRAMPOLINE
1. SIZE
One factor to consider when choosing a trampoline is size.
8ft, 9ft & 10ft trampolines
An 8ft, 9ft or 10ft trampoline is perfect for a small yard/area. Generally, this size is best suited for use by a young child. Our smallest available trampoline, the 8ft trampoline, is lower to the ground, so considering the weight of the users is important. If space and budget can stretch, a 10ft trampoline is a better long-term choice.
Where: These smaller size trampolines are best for a small yard/area.
Best for: Families with small children where usage will be casual.
12ft trampoline
A 12ft trampoline is a great in-between size for those who don’t want it to dominate their yard area, yet want a trampoline big enough to suit an older child who intends to use the trampoline frequently.
Where: A 12ft trampoline will suit most average-sized yards/outdoor areas.
Best for: Families with two kids (multiple users) or teenagers (heavier users).
14ft & 15ft trampolines
If space and budget allow it, these bigger-sized trampolines are ideal for large families or situations where lots of children want to be involved. Due to their size, these are the safest trampolines.
Where: These large trampolines are suited to large backyards/outdoor areas.
Best for: Large families/families who often entertain the kids’ friends (multiple and frequent users), families with older children (heavier users), or a user who intends to perform tricks on the trampoline with the extra jumping space.
2. SAFETY
A trampoline’s safety enclosure is an important consideration when buying a trampoline.
It is ideal for the enclosure net to attach inside the springs, to keep jumpers away from the springs and frame. A tight-weave net enclosure will provide extra strength and helps ensure fingers don’t get stuck in the netting. A rod around the top of the net will give extra support and help to prevent net sag and, for maximum strength and support, look for extra safety/support features at the bottom of the enclosure where impact will be most frequent. Some trampolines also have safety clips on the entry zip – especially handy when younger children will be using the trampoline.
3. FRAME
There are different options to consider with regard to the frame.
If you want to maximise the trampoline’s lifespan, opt for a galvanised steel frame, as this will help protect from rust. Or for ultimate protection, go for a galvanised steel frame with hammertone paint finish.
The weight and thickness of the frame affects the trampoline’s strength and stability (and therefore how much weight it can hold). Check that this fits with your needs.
4. SPRINGS
Finally, consider the springs – these affect a trampoline’s bounce. The longer and thicker the springs, the better and higher the bounce!
Need more help?
Of course there are other considerations such as UV protection, safety pad thickness, and which trampolines fit within your budget. However, this guide should arm you with enough information to get started – and hopefully gives enough insight to help you choose a trampoline. Our staff members can always help with extra advice if you need.

2 STEPS TO CHOOSING A BASKETBALL RING
Choosing a basketball ring/system in 2 easy steps:
STEP 1. CHOOSE A TYPE THAT SUITS YOUR NEEDS
Consider where the system will be, and who will be using it.
In-ground basketball systems
Best for:
Where – Premium performance usage in a permanent paved area
Who – Competitive or professional players, casual but regular players, families, teens
Standard in-ground basketball systems secure the basketball pole in concrete. These types of basketball systems offer the best level of stability. The pole cannot be removed or adjusted without damaging the concrete, but some systems can be removed using a ground sleeve. The height of these systems is adjustable.

Portable basketball systems
Best for:
Where – Anywhere where portability is important
Who – Portable systems with an acrylic or polycarb backboard are best for casual players, young kids and families. Portable systems with a glass backboard are ideal for competitive players.
A portable basketball system allows you to play basketball almost anywhere. These standalone units feature a base with wheels, backboard, pole and rim. For stability, fill the base with water or sand. These basketball systems are convenient and easy. Portable basketball systems offer a similar amount of stability as in-ground systems, and are a great option for those who are deterred by basketball system installation. These basketball systems make great Christmas gifts as they are enjoyable for the whole family. They are also adjustable; helpful for teaching young kinds to play. Sportsmart stocks the largest range of portable basketball systems in Australia.

Wall-mounted basketball systems
Best for:
Where – Tight spaces or areas where there is no fixed place for a pole/bar
Who – Casual but regular players, families, teens
Wall-mounted basketball systems can be attached to a garage/carport, wall, side of the house etc. These types of basketball systems will need to be installed, and generally include a backboard, hoop and net. Backboards require the mounting kit/connections to be purchased separately, and they can be either fixed or adjustable. Sportsmart sells suitable mounting equipment in store and online. When purchasing a wall-mounted basketball system, it is important to consider the area in which the system will be placed. Different types of roofs may have trouble holding the backboard straight. When considering this option, ensure you make staff aware of where your basketball backboard will be placed so they can offer installation advice. Basketball rings need to be mounted to 10 feet.

STEP 2. CHOOSE BACKBOARD SIZE & TYPE
Size considerations:
Sportsmart offers basketball backboards in 8 sizes: 24”, 32”, 42”, 44”, 48”, 50”, 52”, 54”, 60” and 72”. The main factors affecting the size you choose are the size of your playing area and the skill level of those who will be using it.
The 24” and 32” are junior basketball systems best for young kids from 3 years old.
Spalding 32″ Youth Basketball System
The 42” and 44” backboards are most suited to young children playing casually.
Spalding Silver Series 42″ Acrylic Portable Basketball System
Backboards sized 48”, 50” and 52” are best for a small playing area, and can often be a good option to suit budgets.
Spalding Gold Acrylic 50″ In-ground Basketball System
For a playing area the size of a 2-car driveway, a 54” or 60” backboard will suit.
Spalding 54″ Glass Portable Basketball System
For more professional players who want to best replicate actual playing conditions, and who have the space and budget to suit, a 72” backboard is ideal.
Spalding Glass 72″ Arena View In-ground Basketball System
Material type:
The materials used in the backboard affect the bounce or rebound factor.
Glass
Glass backboards feature the best rebound performance and are ideal for highly competitive play. Glass backboards also stay crystal clear for the life of the basketball system.
Best for: heavy use; competition or professional players
Spalding ‘The Beast’ 60″ Glass Portable Basketball System
Acrylic
Acrylic backboards feature very good rebound performance and are ideal for competitive play. Acrylic backboards are lighter than glass boards, so they don’t require as large of a pole to support them. While acrylic boards can dull from scratches, this is a cheaper option than glass backboards.
Best for: casual-heavy use; families; teens and children
Spalding Diamond 54″ Acrylic Portable Basketball System
Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate backboards feature good rebound performance and are ideal for recreational play.
Best for: casual use; children
Spalding Silver 42″ NBL Polycarbonate Portable Basketball System
Composite
Composite backboards offer a recreational level of play and a large variety of colour options.
Best for: young children playing for fun

HOW TO CHOOSE A TABLE TENNIS TABLE
Our guide to help you choose a table tennis table to best suit your needs!
What are the main features to consider when choosing a table tennis table?
There are two main types of table tennis table: indoor and outdoor.
Indoor table tennis tables are for indoor use, and provide a more natural bounce than outdoor models. Indoor table tennis tables should be kept away from direct sunlight and moisture to help avoid warping. Buying a table cover can assist with protecting the table.
If you plan to keep your table tennis table outdoors, or in an area with exposure to sunlight or moisture, consider an outdoor table. Sportsmart stocks the Lion Deluxe Outdoor Table Tennis Table, which features an aluminium alloy surface, rather than MDF.
Lion Deluxe Outdoor Table Tennis Table.
Another consideration is table thickness (see below for more information).
Does the table thickness matter?
Sportsmart stocks table tennis tables in a variety of thicknesses. Our indoor tables are available in 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 22mm and 25mm. Our outdoor aluminium alloy table tennis table surface is 4mm thick.
Table thickness can affect the natural bounce of the ball. Serious players will notice the difference between a 25mm and a 12mm table. For leisure players and families, a 12mm or 15mm table will be suitable, though a thicker table selection will be more durable and also come with a heavier frame – handy for heavy or rough use, or if several family members will be using the table.
Does the surface colour mean anything?
The surface of a table tennis table is normally a dark colour; many years ago all tables were green, now most are blue (in line with competition rules). About 90% of Sportsmart’s table tennis tables are sold for leisure, so the competition blue rule does not come into play. Sportsmart has introduced some fun colour tops and trims that have been very popular.
The Stiga Deluxe 18mm Table Tennis Table is black with vibrant yellow trim.
What are the best table tennis tables for family leisure?
Most families will be happy with a 12mm or 15mm table. Thicker table tops normally have heavier frames that can come in handy if you think your family needs something more durable. It’s a good idea to get advice in store to help select the best table tennis table for your needs.
Olympic Fitness Whirlwind 15mm Table Tennis Table.
Which tables do you recommend for heavy use?
Heavy users of table tennis tables will get a longer lifespan selecting a thicker table with a heavier-duty frame. Serious players will normally select a table that is 18mm or thicker. A thicker table is less likely to have problems such as warping or buckling.
Stiga Deluxe 22mm Table Tennis Table.
Sportsmart has more than 10 table tennis models to choose from, to suit a variety of needs. We stock Stiga, Olympic and Lion table tennis tables. Visit us in store or contact our online team for more advice on finding the right table tennis table. Click here to view our range.
HOW TO SELECT TRAIL RUNNING SHOES
A trail running shoe is tougher than a typical running shoe so that your feet are protected against the more rugged terrain. Your trail running shoes should keep your feet dry and cool and feature a sole designed to gain traction on wet or uneven surfaces.
Select a trail running shoe that has a strong sole as it will help you gain more traction on rocks and in the mud. The sole must also be able to absorb shocks that come from unstable and uneven surfaces i.e. gravel dirt and rocks.
Find a trail running shoe that has a durable upper which is waterproof and easy to clean. The upper of the shoe should be able to take perspiration away from the foot and keep it dry and cool.
Ensure that your trail running shoes fit snugly; this will help you avoid blisters. However, you may need to find a trail running shoe that will stretch so that you are able to wear an extra thick pair of socks during colder months.
Pick a lightweight trail running shoe which will help to reduce fatigue when you go on longer runs. Also remember to buy the correct type of socks to wear with your trail running shoes. It may not seem that important but your socks need to be lightweight and allow your feet to breathe as they will work together with your trail running shoes to protect your feet from blisters.
Sportsmart stocks the latest trail running shoes from Brooks, Nike and Asics. You can view our range of trail running shoes online or visit our stores to try a pair on for yourself.
