HOW TO CHOOSE A TABLE TENNIS TABLE

Our guide to help you choose a table tennis table to best suit your needs!

What are the main features to consider when choosing a table tennis table?

There are two main types of table tennis table: indoor and outdoor.

Indoor table tennis tables are for indoor use, and provide a more natural bounce than outdoor models. Indoor table tennis tables should be kept away from direct sunlight and moisture to help avoid warping. Buying a table cover can assist with protecting the table.

If you plan to keep your table tennis table outdoors, or in an area with exposure to sunlight or moisture, consider an outdoor table. Sportsmart stocks the Lion Deluxe Outdoor Table Tennis Table, which features an aluminium alloy surface, rather than MDF.

liondeluxe

Lion Deluxe Outdoor Table Tennis Table.

Another consideration is table thickness (see below for more information).

Does the table thickness matter?

Sportsmart stocks table tennis tables in a variety of thicknesses. Our indoor tables are available in 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 22mm and 25mm. Our outdoor aluminium alloy table tennis table surface is 4mm thick.

Table thickness can affect the natural bounce of the ball. Serious players will notice the difference between a 25mm and a 12mm table. For leisure players and families, a 12mm or 15mm table will be suitable, though a thicker table selection will be more durable and also come with a heavier frame – handy for heavy or rough use, or if several family members will be using the table.

Does the surface colour mean anything?

The surface of a table tennis table is normally a dark colour; many years ago all tables were green, now most are blue (in line with competition rules). About 90% of Sportsmart’s table tennis tables are sold for leisure, so the competition blue rule does not come into play. Sportsmart has introduced some fun colour tops and trims that have been very popular.

The Stiga Deluxe 18mm Table Tennis Table is black with vibrant yellow trim.

What are the best table tennis tables for family leisure?

Most families will be happy with a 12mm or 15mm table. Thicker table tops normally have heavier frames that can come in handy if you think your family needs something more durable. It’s a good idea to get advice in store to help select the best table tennis table for your needs.

Which tables do you recommend for heavy use?

Heavy users of table tennis tables will get a longer lifespan selecting a thicker table with a heavier-duty frame. Serious players will normally select a table that is 18mm or thicker. A thicker table is less likely to have problems such as warping or buckling.

HOW TO SERVE IN TABLE TENNIS

Table tennis is growing in popularity around the world, with many players. Any sport takes practice and it is also good to know the moves and rules associated with the game. Serving is an important aspect of table tennis and can dictate whether you win or lose.

Place your feet at a 45 degree angle to the table and bend your knees slightly to position yourself to serve. Place the ball in the palm of your non-serving hand and bend forward slightly.

Your legs should be slightly more than shoulder width apart. Make sure your hand is higher than the table’s surface and behind the endline.

Hold the table tennis bat with your serving hand immediately behind the hand holding the ball. Keep your serving arm’s elbow bent at about 90 degrees.

Throw the ball at least 6 inches and hit it immediately with the bat. Make sure the table tennis table bounces once on your side of the net and once on theirs.

Some important tips:

  • Keep your wrist relaxed and loose to improve the spin on your table tennis serve.
  • Concentrate on setting up your next shot instead of acing your opponent.
  • You must keep the table tennis ball and racquet above the table’s surface at all times when attempting a serve.
  • Never let the ball touch the net on the way over to your opponent’s side of the table. If this happens, you’ll have to serve again.

HOW TO HOLD A TABLE TENNIS PADDLE

Learning how to properly hold your table tennis paddle is essential if you intend on playing at your best in table tennis. Whether you are playing seriously or for fun the grip and way you hold your paddle will determine how you play the game.

To hold a table tennis paddle, firstly place the wood handle across your hand with your palm facing forward. Then clasp your pinky finger, ring finger and middle finger loosely around the handle of the paddle. Next, extend your index finger along the back side of the rubber paddle while maintaining a loose grip with your other fingers. You must then clasp your thumb around the side of your paddle opposite your index finger, meeting your other three fingers which are wrapped around the handle of the paddle.

Grip tightness refers to the amount of tightness in your grip of the table tennis paddle. Your grip depends on the type of shot you intend to play. A loose grip is used when you are trying to help reduce the effect of power or spin of an opponent’s shot. Holding your paddle slightly looser allows the paddle to move a little more backwards when contact is made. This will cause more of the spin to be absorbed by the paddle. A loose grip is also useful when you are attempting to play a gentle drop shot over the net. Having a loose grip allows you to hit softer.

You would use a firm grip when you want to impact your own spin on the ball. When you use a firm grip you usually want to get as much spin or speed out of your stroke as you can. Having a firm grip will also help when you are trying to loop, reloop or block the ball pace. There are two main times when you should change your grip and that is when you are serving and during a rally.

Sportsmart stocks a variety of table tennis paddles and other table tennis equipment. You can view our table tennis tables online of come into one of our stores to see our complete table tennis range.
