GET THE EDGE: GET COMPRESSION GEAR

No matter what kind of training or sport you do, compression gear can help your body to perform at optimum level, and recover faster.

How does it work?

Compression garments are scientifically proven to improve circulation (helps optimise body temperature), helping the body perform and recover better by delivering more oxygen to the muscles. This assists in improving performance when exercising and reducing lactic acid build-up and injury risk.

For best results, we recommend you wear compression gear during training, while playing and for post-match or post-training recovery.

Sportsmart stocks compression garments from Skins, 2XU and Performax, for men, women and kids. Our range includes full-length tights, capris (3/4 length), shorts, short-sleeved tops, long-sleeved tops and more.

Check out our compression page in our online store, or visit your local store for all your compression needs. Range varies from store to store.

WHY USE A HEART RATE MONITOR?

Heart rate monitors can be used to help achieve training goals, for more effective workouts.

A training goal can relate to weight loss, fitness, endurance or performance. A heart rate monitor enables you to use a percentage of your maximum heart rate as a guide, so that the intensity chosen is best suited to your goal.

Heart rate monitors can be beneficial for everyone from beginners to professional athletes. As well as tracking your pulse rate, some heart rate monitors can provide constant information about your heart rate and desired rate zone. This information is useful in improving your exercise, and especially important for anyone with a medical condition where it is necessary to avoid heart strain.

There are 2 types of heart rate monitors. ECG monitors that come fitted with a chest strap are generally the most accurate. The chest strap detects electrical activity in the heart, and transmits this information to the receiver (worn on your wrist). Heart rate monitors without a strap work by detecting your pulse rate. These monitors are cheaper and ideal for anyone who needs a simple guide when exercising.

Sportsmart’s Director, Gerrard Woods, opts for the Suunto Ambit2 GPS heart rate monitor for his training needs.

“I personally use the Suunto Ambit 2. While I find the watch to be extremely versatile and easy to use during exercise, my favourite feature is Suunto’s online system, Movescount, that you can send your exercise data to after each use. Movescount lets you see and review many features of your exercise, from heart rate to pace, distance, and many other metrics. It also lets you go back to your previous exercise results to compare your current results against your previous performances so you can track your progress and (hopefully) your improvement.”

4 STEPS TO CHOOSING A TRAMPOLINE

1. SIZE

One factor to consider when choosing a trampoline is size.

8ft, 9ft & 10ft trampolines

An 8ft, 9ft or 10ft trampoline is perfect for a small yard/area. Generally, this size is best suited for use by a young child. Our smallest available trampoline, the 8ft trampoline, is lower to the ground, so considering the weight of the users is important. If space and budget can stretch, a 10ft trampoline is a better long-term choice.

Where: These smaller size trampolines are best for a small yard/area.

Best for: Families with small children where usage will be casual.

12ft trampoline

A 12ft trampoline is a great in-between size for those who don’t want it to dominate their yard area, yet want a trampoline big enough to suit an older child who intends to use the trampoline frequently.

Where: A 12ft trampoline will suit most average-sized yards/outdoor areas.

Best for: Families with two kids (multiple users) or teenagers (heavier users).

Sportslife 12ft Trampoline Combo with Enclosure

14ft & 15ft trampolines

If space and budget allow it, these bigger-sized trampolines are ideal for large families or situations where lots of children want to be involved. Due to their size, these are the safest trampolines.

Where: These large trampolines are suited to large backyards/outdoor areas.

Best for: Large families/families who often entertain the kids’ friends (multiple and frequent users), families with older children (heavier users), or a user who intends to perform tricks on the trampoline with the extra jumping space.

2. SAFETY

A trampoline’s safety enclosure is an important consideration when buying a trampoline.

It is ideal for the enclosure net to attach inside the springs, to keep jumpers away from the springs and frame. A tight-weave net enclosure will provide extra strength and helps ensure fingers don’t get stuck in the netting. A rod around the top of the net will give extra support and help to prevent net sag and, for maximum strength and support, look for extra safety/support features at the bottom of the enclosure where impact will be most frequent. Some trampolines also have safety clips on the entry zip – especially handy when younger children will be using the trampoline.

3. FRAME

There are different options to consider with regard to the frame.

If you want to maximise the trampoline’s lifespan, opt for a galvanised steel frame, as this will help protect from rust. Or for ultimate protection, go for a galvanised steel frame with hammertone paint finish.

The weight and thickness of the frame affects the trampoline’s strength and stability (and therefore how much weight it can hold). Check that this fits with your needs.

4. SPRINGS

Finally, consider the springs – these affect a trampoline’s bounce. The longer and thicker the springs, the better and higher the bounce!

Need more help?

Of course there are other considerations such as UV protection, safety pad thickness, and which trampolines fit within your budget. However, this guide should arm you with enough information to get started – and hopefully gives enough insight to help you choose a trampoline. Our staff members can always help with extra advice if you need.

2 STEPS TO CHOOSING A BASKETBALL RING

Choosing a basketball ring/system in 2 easy steps:

STEP 1. CHOOSE A TYPE THAT SUITS YOUR NEEDS

Consider where the system will be, and who will be using it.

In-ground basketball systems

Best for:
Where – Premium performance usage in a permanent paved area
Who – Competitive or professional players, casual but regular players, families, teens

Standard in-ground basketball systems secure the basketball pole in concrete. These types of basketball systems offer the best level of stability. The pole cannot be removed or adjusted without damaging the concrete, but some systems can be removed using a ground sleeve. The height of these systems is adjustable.

Portable basketball systems

Best for:
Where – Anywhere where portability is important
Who – Portable systems with an acrylic or polycarb backboard are best for casual players, young kids and families. Portable systems with a glass backboard are ideal for competitive players.

A portable basketball system allows you to play basketball almost anywhere. These standalone units feature a base with wheels, backboard, pole and rim. For stability, fill the base with water or sand. These basketball systems are convenient and easy. Portable basketball systems offer a similar amount of stability as in-ground systems, and are a great option for those who are deterred by basketball system installation. These basketball systems make great Christmas gifts as they are enjoyable for the whole family. They are also adjustable; helpful for teaching young kinds to play. Sportsmart stocks the largest range of portable basketball systems in Australia.

Wall-mounted basketball systems

Best for:
Where – Tight spaces or areas where there is no fixed place for a pole/bar
Who – Casual but regular players, families, teens

Wall-mounted basketball systems can be attached to a garage/carport, wall, side of the house etc. These types of basketball systems will need to be installed, and generally include a backboard, hoop and net. Backboards require the mounting kit/connections to be purchased separately, and they can be either fixed or adjustable. Sportsmart sells suitable mounting equipment in store and online. When purchasing a wall-mounted basketball system, it is important to consider the area in which the system will be placed. Different types of roofs may have trouble holding the backboard straight. When considering this option, ensure you make staff aware of where your basketball backboard will be placed so they can offer installation advice. Basketball rings need to be mounted to 10 feet.

STEP 2. CHOOSE BACKBOARD SIZE & TYPE

Size considerations:

Sportsmart offers basketball backboards in 8 sizes: 24”, 32”, 42”, 44”, 48”, 50”, 52”, 54”, 60” and 72”. The main factors affecting the size you choose are the size of your playing area and the skill level of those who will be using it.

The 24” and 32” are junior basketball systems best for young kids from 3 years old.

Spalding 32 Youth Basketball System

Spalding 32″ Youth Basketball System

The 42” and 44” backboards are most suited to young children playing casually.

Spalding Silver Series 42 Acrylic Basketball System

Spalding Silver Series 42″ Acrylic Portable Basketball System

Backboards sized 48”, 50” and 52” are best for a small playing area, and can often be a good option to suit budgets.

Spalding Gold Acrylic 50 Inground

Spalding Gold Acrylic 50″ In-ground Basketball System

For a playing area the size of a 2-car driveway, a 54” or 60” backboard will suit.

Spalding 54 Glass Portable Basketball System

Spalding 54″ Glass Portable Basketball System

For more professional players who want to best replicate actual playing conditions, and who have the space and budget to suit, a 72” backboard is ideal.

Spalding Glass 72 Arena View Inground Basketball System

Spalding Glass 72″ Arena View In-ground Basketball System

Material type:

The materials used in the backboard affect the bounce or rebound factor.

Glass

Glass backboards feature the best rebound performance and are ideal for highly competitive play. Glass backboards also stay crystal clear for the life of the basketball system.

Best for: heavy use; competition or professional players

Spalding The Beast 60 Glass Portable Basketball System

Spalding ‘The Beast’ 60″ Glass Portable Basketball System

Acrylic

Acrylic backboards feature very good rebound performance and are ideal for competitive play. Acrylic backboards are lighter than glass boards, so they don’t require as large of a pole to support them. While acrylic boards can dull from scratches, this is a cheaper option than glass backboards.

Best for: casual-heavy use; families; teens and children

Spalding Diamond 54 Acrylic Portable Basketball System

Spalding Diamond 54″ Acrylic Portable Basketball System

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate backboards feature good rebound performance and are ideal for recreational play.

Best for: casual use; children

Composite

Of course there are other considerations such as your preferred method of height adjustment, which can vary between different systems, ring type, and which basketball systems fit within your budget. But if you follow the 2-step process, you really can’t go wrong!

HOW TO CHOOSE A TABLE TENNIS TABLE

Our guide to help you choose a table tennis table to best suit your needs!

What are the main features to consider when choosing a table tennis table?

There are two main types of table tennis table: indoor and outdoor.

Indoor table tennis tables are for indoor use, and provide a more natural bounce than outdoor models. Indoor table tennis tables should be kept away from direct sunlight and moisture to help avoid warping. Buying a table cover can assist with protecting the table.

If you plan to keep your table tennis table outdoors, or in an area with exposure to sunlight or moisture, consider an outdoor table. Sportsmart stocks the Lion Deluxe Outdoor Table Tennis Table, which features an aluminium alloy surface, rather than MDF.

liondeluxe

Lion Deluxe Outdoor Table Tennis Table.

Another consideration is table thickness (see below for more information).

Does the table thickness matter?

Sportsmart stocks table tennis tables in a variety of thicknesses. Our indoor tables are available in 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 22mm and 25mm. Our outdoor aluminium alloy table tennis table surface is 4mm thick.

Table thickness can affect the natural bounce of the ball. Serious players will notice the difference between a 25mm and a 12mm table. For leisure players and families, a 12mm or 15mm table will be suitable, though a thicker table selection will be more durable and also come with a heavier frame – handy for heavy or rough use, or if several family members will be using the table.

Does the surface colour mean anything?

The surface of a table tennis table is normally a dark colour; many years ago all tables were green, now most are blue (in line with competition rules). About 90% of Sportsmart’s table tennis tables are sold for leisure, so the competition blue rule does not come into play. Sportsmart has introduced some fun colour tops and trims that have been very popular.

stigadeluxe18mm_500

The Stiga Deluxe 18mm Table Tennis Table is black with vibrant yellow trim.

What are the best table tennis tables for family leisure?

Most families will be happy with a 12mm or 15mm table. Thicker table tops normally have heavier frames that can come in handy if you think your family needs something more durable. It’s a good idea to get advice in store to help select the best table tennis table for your needs.

olympicfitness15mm

Olympic Fitness Whirlwind 15mm Table Tennis Table.

Which tables do you recommend for heavy use?

Heavy users of table tennis tables will get a longer lifespan selecting a thicker table with a heavier-duty frame. Serious players will normally select a table that is 18mm or thicker. A thicker table is less likely to have problems such as warping or buckling.

HOW TO CHOOSE A BASKETBALL SYSTEM

A benefit of owning your own basketball system is that you can enjoy shooting hoops in your own backyard. You might use the system to practice your game for competition or simply because you enjoy basketball. There are different types of basketball systems available and each are suited to different types of players. The standard size for a basketball ring is 10’ (3.05m) from the ground.

Choosing a basketball system can seem like a difficult task. We have put together a simple guide to help you choose the best basketball system for your needs and budget. We have also selected some basketball systems for each type to help you when making your choice.

Types of basketball systems:

Wall mounted basketball systems: These basketball systems can be attached to the side of your house, garage, wall etc. These types of basketball systems will need to be installed and will generally include a backboard, hoop, net and sometimes a mounting kit. Other basketball systems require connections to be purchased separately. Sportsmart sells suitable mounting equipment in store and online. When purchasing a wall mounted basketball system it is important to consider the area in which the system will be placed. Different types of roofs may have trouble holding the backboard straight. When considering this option, ensure you make staff aware of where your basketball system will be placed so they can provide you with the best advice on installation.

Portable basketball systems: You will be able to play basketball almost anywhere with a portable basketball system. These standalone units will normally feature a base with wheels, backboard, pole and rim. To ensure added stability, fill the base with water or sand. These basketball systems are convenient and easy to conceal, once play is finished they can be wheeled into the garage and some can even be folded down. Portable basketball systems do not offer the same amount of stability as in-ground systems but they are a great option for casual players who are deterred by basketball system installation. These basketball systems also make great Christmas gifts as they are enjoyable for the whole family. Sportsmart stocks a variety of portable basketball systems which are also adjustable. This added feature helps young kids when practicing.

In-ground basketball systems: Standard in-ground basketball systems secure the basketball pole in concrete. These types of basketball systems offer maximum stability as a result. However, the pole cannot be removed or adjusted without damaging the concrete.  The height of the system itself is adjustable which is helpful when teaching young kids how to play basketball. It is extremely important to ensure the in-ground basketball system you choose has marks which will help you determine the distance between the hoop and the ground before the cement dries. If you are unfamiliar with installing an in-ground system, ask a staff member to advise you on who you can contact to install your basketball system.

When choosing a backboard it is important to consider the bounce or rebound factor of the backboard. The materials used in the backboard provide different results. To ease the selection process we have put together a simple guide to help you understand the backboards available to you.
