HOW TO CHOOSE A TABLE TENNIS TABLE

Our guide to help you choose a table tennis table to best suit your needs!

What are the main features to consider when choosing a table tennis table?

There are two main types of table tennis table: indoor and outdoor.

Indoor table tennis tables are for indoor use, and provide a more natural bounce than outdoor models. Indoor table tennis tables should be kept away from direct sunlight and moisture to help avoid warping. Buying a table cover can assist with protecting the table.

If you plan to keep your table tennis table outdoors, or in an area with exposure to sunlight or moisture, consider an outdoor table. Sportsmart stocks the Lion Deluxe Outdoor Table Tennis Table, which features an aluminium alloy surface, rather than MDF.

liondeluxe

Lion Deluxe Outdoor Table Tennis Table.

Another consideration is table thickness (see below for more information).

Does the table thickness matter?

Sportsmart stocks table tennis tables in a variety of thicknesses. Our indoor tables are available in 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 22mm and 25mm. Our outdoor aluminium alloy table tennis table surface is 4mm thick.

Table thickness can affect the natural bounce of the ball. Serious players will notice the difference between a 25mm and a 12mm table. For leisure players and families, a 12mm or 15mm table will be suitable, though a thicker table selection will be more durable and also come with a heavier frame – handy for heavy or rough use, or if several family members will be using the table.

Does the surface colour mean anything?

The surface of a table tennis table is normally a dark colour; many years ago all tables were green, now most are blue (in line with competition rules). About 90% of Sportsmart’s table tennis tables are sold for leisure, so the competition blue rule does not come into play. Sportsmart has introduced some fun colour tops and trims that have been very popular.

The Stiga Deluxe 18mm Table Tennis Table is black with vibrant yellow trim.

What are the best table tennis tables for family leisure?

Most families will be happy with a 12mm or 15mm table. Thicker table tops normally have heavier frames that can come in handy if you think your family needs something more durable. It’s a good idea to get advice in store to help select the best table tennis table for your needs.

olympicfitness15mm

Which tables do you recommend for heavy use?

Heavy users of table tennis tables will get a longer lifespan selecting a thicker table with a heavier-duty frame. Serious players will normally select a table that is 18mm or thicker. A thicker table is less likely to have problems such as warping or buckling.

HOW TO CHOOSE A BASKETBALL SYSTEM

A benefit of owning your own basketball system is that you can enjoy shooting hoops in your own backyard. You might use the system to practice your game for competition or simply because you enjoy basketball. There are different types of basketball systems available and each are suited to different types of players. The standard size for a basketball ring is 10’ (3.05m) from the ground.

Choosing a basketball system can seem like a difficult task. We have put together a simple guide to help you choose the best basketball system for your needs and budget. We have also selected some basketball systems for each type to help you when making your choice.

Types of basketball systems:

Wall mounted basketball systems: These basketball systems can be attached to the side of your house, garage, wall etc. These types of basketball systems will need to be installed and will generally include a backboard, hoop, net and sometimes a mounting kit. Other basketball systems require connections to be purchased separately. Sportsmart sells suitable mounting equipment in store and online. When purchasing a wall mounted basketball system it is important to consider the area in which the system will be placed. Different types of roofs may have trouble holding the backboard straight. When considering this option, ensure you make staff aware of where your basketball system will be placed so they can provide you with the best advice on installation.

Portable basketball systems: You will be able to play basketball almost anywhere with a portable basketball system. These standalone units will normally feature a base with wheels, backboard, pole and rim. To ensure added stability, fill the base with water or sand. These basketball systems are convenient and easy to conceal, once play is finished they can be wheeled into the garage and some can even be folded down. Portable basketball systems do not offer the same amount of stability as in-ground systems but they are a great option for casual players who are deterred by basketball system installation. These basketball systems also make great Christmas gifts as they are enjoyable for the whole family. Sportsmart stocks a variety of portable basketball systems which are also adjustable. This added feature helps young kids when practicing.

In-ground basketball systems: Standard in-ground basketball systems secure the basketball pole in concrete. These types of basketball systems offer maximum stability as a result. However, the pole cannot be removed or adjusted without damaging the concrete.  The height of the system itself is adjustable which is helpful when teaching young kids how to play basketball. It is extremely important to ensure the in-ground basketball system you choose has marks which will help you determine the distance between the hoop and the ground before the cement dries. If you are unfamiliar with installing an in-ground system, ask a staff member to advise you on who you can contact to install your basketball system.

When choosing a backboard it is important to consider the bounce or rebound factor of the backboard. The materials used in the backboard provide different results. To ease the selection process we have put together a simple guide to help you understand the backboards available to you.

BEST RUNNING SHOES OF 2013

Spring is in the air in Melbourne! So, if you’re like us, you are looking forward to getting outdoors and going for a run. It is extremely important to wear the correct footwear when running, so to help you out we have put together our Top 10 list of our best mens and womens running shoes for 2013 so far.

1) Asics Gel Nimbus 15

We consider the Asics Gel Nimbus 15 running shoes to be the best neutral running shoes of 2013. Big call we know, but it’s justified. These runners contain both SpEVA and Solyte in the midsole; in simple terms, this double-layered feature provides you with the comfort you need as a runner. A new stretch mesh called Fluid Fit has also been used in the upper to deliver the ultimate fit and to ensure that your feet are secure while on the move. Asics went all out in this model to ensure cushioning was at the forefront of their design. The Gel in the forefoot and midsole is noticeable as soon as you put the shoes on, making the Asics Nimbus 15s suitable for a variety of different running styles. If you’re looking for a reliable Asics running shoe, the Gel Nimbus 15 is perfect.

The Asics Gel Kayano 19s fit like a glove. That’s why we’ve chosen these runners as the best stability running shoes of 2013. This season’s model includes all new Guidance Trusstic technology and more flexible forefoot boost mechanics. Basically, these features have been included to reduce the time your feet spend on the ground. The Kayano 19s have also had a 20g weight reduction, making them the lightest Kayano’s to date! To top it off, this seasons Kayano’s produce 27% less carbon per pair during the production process. True to Asics form, these Asics running shoes not only feel great but look great too and are available in a fun array of colours.

3) Nike Free 5.0

The third pick of the year is the Nike Free 5.0. We’ve chosen these Nike running shoes as the best lightweight running shoes of 2013. The Nike Free has been designed to achieve the barefoot running sensation; therefore this shoe has been engineered differently to other running shoes. As you try these runners on you can immediately feel that you are wearing something very different. The upper of these minimalist running shoes is made from a lightweight, breathable mesh and is also extremely flexible to allow the foot to move naturally; in fact, it is so flexible you can almost roll the shoe up into a ball! (We don’t recommend doing this too often)! The phylon from the midsole is strategically placed to ensure durability. For a smooth ride in a fun lightweight package, check out the Nike Free 5.0.

Flexible. Lightweight. Comfortable. These are just a few words to describe the Nike Flex runners. At number four, the Nike Flex running shoes feature a stretched bootie with a breathable overlay; this ensures your feet experience enhanced breathability and a more customised fit. The soft phylon midsole also provides great cushioning in all the right places. The outsole is extremely tough as it is made from Phylite; this material combines the cushion of the midsole with the durability of the outsole. The two work together to ensure the foot feels a full range of motion. If you’re a fan of Nike, you should definitely check out these Nike running shoes online.

The upper on these Asics running shoes is now also seam free, further improving comfort while running. Asics traditional GEL cushioning system is located in the heel and provides comfort during long runs. The Asics GT 2000 is ideal for runners looking for added stability from their running shoes.

REVIEW: NIKE FREE RUN 5.0 WOMEN’S RUNNING SHOE

Personal trainer Tavia Ambler reviews the new Nike Free Run 5.0 women’s running/performance lifestyle shoe

As a personal trainer, running shoes are very important to me. I wear them 6 days a week, sometimes for 14 hours a day, so they need to be comfortable and supportive. I have been an avid supporter of the Nike Free running shoes since they came out a few years ago, and now they make up every runner in my wardrobe.

The new Nike Free Run 5.0 are the most comfortable shoes I have worn. They are incredibly light, so your feet don’t get sore and feel heavy, but they also have enough support and cushioning underneath and around the foot. People who are used to wearing a very supportive running shoe may take a little time to get used to the feel of the Nike Free 5.0 runners, and I would suggest transitioning through. Start by wearing them for walking, and then start to include them more into your everyday routine, gradually building up to wearing them for running and cross-training.

The shoe is designed to help make your run more comfortable and has features that mimic barefoot running. However this running shoe also has the support to help create a secure feel and a natural range of motion within the foot. This will allow you to develop a more natural running style (as well as help strengthen all the muscles in your feet).

For me, they were the best thing for my running as I had terrible before the Nike Free Run 5.0 I had terrible troubles with my Achilles. After changing to the Nike Free Run 5.0 the pain went away and I felt a much better rhythm while running.

Although the Nike Free Run 5.0 shoes are designed for running, they are also a really good travel shoe (because they are so lightweight) and also great for walking and everyday activities. I would recommend them to anyone!
