HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WALKING SHOES

Walking requires proper footwear in order to prevent injury, improve your performance and keep you comfortable on long walks. Generally walking shoes have good shock absorption in the heels and in the balls of the feet. They tend to be a bit stiffer and more supportive than running shoes. They also have a very flexible forefoot in order to allow for the natural bend of the foot. They feature a slightly angled heel so that you have a smooth heel to toe roll. You should look for a shoe that meets your requirements in terms of foot type, injury patterns, speed and walking surface.

Knowing what type of feet you have and having a basic understanding of the terminology used to describe footwear will help you figure out what shoe is best for you. Remember, you should always try on any shoe you intend to buy for fit and comfort.

  • Pronators: (those with flat feet and little to no arch) should look for a motion control shoe which will provide support for the inside of the foot and prevent you from overusing the inside edge of your foot. Pronators should also look for a reinforced heel for stability and control. Try to avoid shoes with too much padding.
  • Supinators: (those with high arches) should look for greater stability and a shoe with an outer sole, insole and midsole for extra shock absorbency. Curved shoes are probably the best for supinators as they have rigid feet. Try to buy shoes with reinforced material around the ankles for maximum support and extra cushioning under the ball of the foot for extra comfort.
  • Neutral feet: For those of you who have neutral feet you can wear just about any shoe and you will have proper support and comfort. You may find that shoes with a curved shape will fit best. Even if you have neutral feet and no issues with injury, you should still invest in a good pair of walking shoes.

Sportsmart stocks a variety of walking shoes for both men and women. You can view our walking shoes online or come into one of our stores to try them on and get expert advice from our footwear staff on picking shoes that are right for you.

BASKETBALL PLAYS: FAST BREAK

A fast break in basketball is where the ball is pushed up the court before the defence has a chance to set up. It is probably one of the most exciting plays to watch and be a part of during the game. The objective of the fast break is to attempt to get an easy basket by using speed and accurate passing.

Most fast breaks occur because the team running the break finds themselves in a situation where they have more players running than the defence has to cover them. Fast breaks can occur due to a defensive rebound or an out of court play or even if a defensive player steals the ball. However, a fast break doesn’t just happen, not making the right decision in terms of who to throw the ball to can stop the play before it even begins.

Generally the guard should always get the ball on the fast break. Once the guard gets the ball they need to make their way to the middle of the court. This is because it will force the defence to decide on whether they will be going left or right with the ball. If the ball is on either side of the court the defence will know where the ball is going, but if the ball is in the middle of the court they have to cover the whole court which will generally lead to an easy attempt at a shot.

The player with the ball must decide what they want to do by the time they reach the foul line. That is, pass the ball off, drive to the ring or stop and take a shot. It is important to have supporting players following the person taking the fast break. If the offensive player finds themself in trouble they can quickly pass the ball and that player can take the shot under less pressure.

IMPROVE YOUR BATTING IN CRICKET

Batting is not an easy thing to do on the cricket field. Proper footwork is important when batting. Footwork is probably the most crucial aspect of batting and a batsman must have excellent footwork in order to play different kinds of shots. An advantage of having good footwork is that it allows you to time the ball and place the ball perfectly in the gaps. Good footwork enables you to be in the best position to hit any ball perfectly with the cricket bat. You must work really hard on your footwork if you want to perfect your batting skills and hit different types of shots. Timing of your shots also becomes easier if you have a sound footwork technique.

Grip is another important aspect of batting. A batsman must have an ideal grip in order to play all the strokes properly. The ideal grip on the bat must be both hands together at the handle of the bat. Make sure that your grip is not too loose or too tight. The correct grip does not restrict you in any way of playing any shots.

As a batsman you must play each ball to your advantage. It is not possible every time for a bowler to bowl six good balls in an over and it is also extremely rare that you will receive six bad balls in an over. You have to remember that it only takes one good ball to get you out. Make sure you watch every ball carefully. Keep watching the ball in the bowlers hand until the ball is delivered. By doing this, you can easily find out what kind of ball the bowler is going to deliver. You will also be prepared in advance to face the type of ball being bowled to you and are able to adjust your footwork accordingly.

Stance is often ignored in batting.  Not many people realise just how important batting stance is. You must ensure that you are basically side on to the bowler, this will decrease the time you need to get your feet in a decent position to hit the ball. Your feet should be shoulder width apart. This will ensure that you are balanced at the crease as your weight will be evenly distributed.

HOW TO USE A WEIGHT BENCH

Using a weight bench is ideal for a strength training work out. A weight bench can be used to stabilise your body during weight training. A standard weight bench is made from steel with padding on top. Benches can be flat or upright, some are even adjustable so that you can slide them to an incline or decline position.

When using a weight bench, experiment with the angle of the bench. Inclining the bench slightly will allow you to work the muscles of your upper chest. However, attempting chest exercises at too high an angle can be dangerous. Declining the bench puts the emphasis on your lower chest. You can change the angles every time you work out if you like.

When you are doing overhead lifts or bicep curls, make sure you are snugly in the seat. This means you will need to adjust the seat so that it is upright. Doing this will protect your back and stop you from cheating – you won’t be able to rock your body back and forth building momentum and will have to rely on your biceps. You will also have to remember to stop yourself from arching the small of your back when the weight is getting heavy.

An important point to remember is to always keep your feet flat and never have your feet in the air. Beginners are prone to doing this and should pay special attention to this bad habit when starting out. Putting your feet in the air will create an unstable and awkward position.

Sportsmart stocks many weight benches with varying features. You can view our weight benches online or come into our stores and talk with our expert fitness staff about selecting and using weight benches.

REVIEW: ADIDAS PREDATOR ABSOLADO X INDOOR SOCCER SHOES

Indoor soccer first began in the 1980’s as a way of staying in shape for the upcoming soccer season. It has now evolved into its own popular sport with tournaments. Indoor soccer requires different shoes from typical soccer boots. Choosing indoor soccer shoes is made easy using our guide.

Indoor soccer shoes are much lighter than normal soccer shoes and look very similar to runners, however they are much tougher. They also have a rubbery sole to prevent you from rolling your ankles. Playing on indoor surfaces is much trickier than playing on a soccer field; therefore you must wear the appropriate footwear that will enable you to move quickly.

The Adidas Predator Absolado X indoor soccer shoes have a full grain/synthetic leather upper providing you with increased comfort and durability. Predator technology is used to improve power and agility. The cushioned EVA insole is ideal for comfort and shock absorption and the rubber outsole is great for indoor traction.

RECRUITING MORE COACHES AND OFFICIALS FOR YOUR SPORTS CLUB

Many sports clubs find it difficult to find and recruit coaches and officials for their clubs. The first place to start would be to look at anyone who has some involvement with the club. Whether they were past players, parents, senior players or friends. The reason for this is that these people have been associated with the club and understand the importance of recruiting new coaches and officials.

Different people coach for different reasons, they may want to support someone in their family who plays sport, they have a passion for the sport, they enjoy helping others and are heavily involved in community activities, they want to keep active or they may see coaching as an avenue to make new friends. Understanding what motivates people can help you in your recruitment campaign.

Younger people are eager to participate in coaching and it may be an idea to direct some effort towards them. They see coaching as an opportunity to learn more about the sport and also as a way of improving their knowledge of the rules of the sport so that they can improve their own performance.

Word of mouth can be very powerful in this situation. If your club looks after their current coaches and officials then these people will be the biggest advocates for the clubs. Use these people to speak to others in the community and encourage them to speak highly of the club and the positions available.

Many TAFE, University students and senior school students studying in the fields of sport, recreation, fitness or physical education are required to do work experience or work placement with a sporting organisation. This is a win-win situation for both the club and the students. Make contact with these institutions and offer students the chance to do their work experience at your club.

Your club may also want to consider implementing a scheme which requires senior players to take on casual coaching role with junior players. For example, each senior player is required to umpire at least one junior game every season. If you choose to do this, it is important that you recognise that these coaches may have less motivation then volunteers and you will probably need to introduce incentives.

TIPS FOR PERSONAL TRAINERS

People looking for a personal trainer look for more than just someone who can provide them with a good workout. They look for someone who can motivate them, cares about them and sets a good example. As a personal trainer you must have a good knowledge of health and fitness. You will not be able to get away with not knowing what you are talking about when consulting with clients. Not only will you look silly when you are caught out, you might cause an injury. Your focus during your training time with your client must be focused completely on your client. You have to put yourself aside for that time and be the most motivating and inspiring trainer you can be.

You must remember that you have boundaries. You have to remain professional. Your client may turn to you for personal advice but you have to stay professional. You have a job to do. Part of that job involves being prepared. This includes showing up to training sessions on time and having your files and equipment ready to go. Your files should include the programs you have developed for clients. Try to have an area where you can work from such as a home office, this will enable you to keep things in order.

It is important to show your clients that you care. Make sure that you return phone calls straight away, reply to emails straight away, follow up with clients to make sure that the program you designed is working for them and send your clients thank-you cards for doing business with you.

Personal trainers need to stay up to date with medicine, fitness, nutrition and even business. These fields are constantly changing. You can attend short courses or go to conferences or workshops to have accurate information. You should also have subscriptions to industry magazines and make an effort to speak to other personal trainers.

Sportsmart offers personal trainers a customised membership program called ClubPT. Personal trainers who are part of ClubPT will receive a discount for not only themselves but also their clients. They are also able to accrue PT Credits and for every 400 credits you will receive a $20 Sportsmart gift voucher. It is free to join so if you’re a personal trainer sign up today!

THE ART OF COACHING…WELL SORT OF

The winner of  the Sportsmart AFL sponsorship program, Micheal Shmerling, provides regular blog articles on his favourite topic – football …

Being only 24 and having just under 4 years of junior coaching experience, I’ve experienced the ups and the downs. In my first year as an assistant we had the under 10’s, a team that won the lightening premiership the year before which placed them in the highest grade the following year. So here we are, with a successful team playing in the highest grade of junior football. That year we lost every game during the season and only 1 win during the lightening premiership. It was a difficult year to say the least, young kids playing in a grade of football that they were clearly not ready for, but each week they tried and tried and tried. It was disappointing to see the look on their faces after a loss, we tried as coaches and they tried as footballers.

The following year we won the flag, those unhappy and sad faces were turned around, the work and the dedication these young soldiers put together each and every week had paid off. They were once again champions. With a season of defeat, the boys rallied, and together they achieved the highest glory.

My most challenging year as a coach came in 2010, a new team and a promotion to head coach. My aim as a head coach is not to win games, but to make sure that these kids have fun, enjoy their football and improve their football skills and knowledge. We had 19 signed up players, which as any football fan would know is not enough. One or 2 players out and the whole team will suffer. A year with 1 and a half wins was the end result as we struggled for numbers each week and the constant use of under 10’s and 9’s players each week. But what the shining light of the season was the devotion and improvements these boys made. The effort they put in each and every week without any negativity.

This article isn’t about my bio as a coach; it’s about never backing down, never taking a backward step in the eye of defeat and always having an inner belief that life is only what you make it. These kids, although only 10 and 11 years of age showed me as a coach and their parents that maturity is only a word unless proven different. I’ve coached 50 young footballers in 4 years and every single one of them are different. But what all of them have in common is the commitment to achieve group success, the ability to bring sportsmanship in a new light, and the dedication to each other to give it their all each and every week. In the eye of defeat, they fight together, in the wake of the sun after a game day they stand tall together, and in the world as young footballers, they are amongst the best.

HOW TO USE AN EXERCISE BIKE

Exercise bikes are available in two types of varieties: upright and recumbent. Upright bikes are similar to regular bikes a part from the fact that you do not actually go anywhere. Recumbent bikes have bucket seats so you pedal out in front of you. No bike is better than the other, it is a personal choice.

Using an exercise bike is great for toning your thighs, with recumbent bikes being especially good at toning your butt. They also give you a great aerobic workout and give your knees a break at the same time. If you are a person who enjoys reading, bikes are great for reading while working out.

You will find that the recumbent offers more support for your back and is more comfortable if you have lower back pain. It is also suitable for those who are new to exercising. You need to remember to adjust your seat, your leg should be almost straight. You should not have to strain your hips to pedal and your knees shouldn’t feel crunched when they are at the top of the pedal stroke.

You must also set the handlebars correctly. You should be able to hold the bars so that your arms extend out at shoulder level. This should feel comfortable and is important to do if you are very tall or short. Also, remember to adjust the pedal straps to a comfortable position and ensure that the straps do not cut off your circulation. Riding with foot straps is much more comfortable then riding without them.

Lastly, do not pedal with just your toes. Press from the ball of your foot and through the heel as you pump downward on the pedal and pull up with the top of your foot on the upstroke.

Sportsmart has a variety of exercise bikes to choose from. View our exercise bikes online or come into one of our stores to try them out for yourself and get expert advice from our fitness staff in choosing a bike suited to your needs.
