HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR GOLF DRIVER

by Mic Walsh, Golf Manager

When it comes to choosing a driver for golf, there are so many choices out there that it can become confusing. Here is a simple guide to help you get the right club for your swing.

Just about every company will do 2 different golf drivers in their range. One for the low handicapper, and one for the high handicapper.

Low handicap golf drivers are designed for shot shaping. They are usually higher in the face and will allow the better player to shape the ball left or right as they see fit. Being higher in the face, they have less width to the head so they are less forgiving.

High handicap golf drivers will be lower in the height of the clubs crown, but wider. This means the ‘sweet spot’ of the club is bigger and the consistency of the drives will be better.

First, choose the driver that you think is right for you. If you just want to hit straight drives, then the wider head club may be for you. If you want to shot shape your drives, the smaller head will help.

Secondly, choose the company you are most confident in. So much of golf is played between the ears, and a confident golfer is usually a good golfer.  If you are confident with the company and confident you have the right club in your hands, you will hit better drives.

There are of course subtle differences between all golf drivers. If you need help figuring out which company, which model and which shape you need to buy, visit us in store at Moorabbin and let our golf experts take you through the options. We have a hitting net where we can put you through your paces and get the right driver to suit your swing.

This month we are having a special on re-gripping. Winter is notorious for slippery worn grips, so come in and take advantage of the Winter Special of a standard re-grip for only $5 per club. We also have many more grips to choose from and all prices include fitting.

Happy golfing!

INDOOR FOOTBALL SHOES

Q&A with Sportsmart’s Footwear Manager, Ryan Meggs

Q. Why are there specific shoes for indoor football/soccer (futsal)?

The major difference between regular sports footwear and indoor soccer shoes is the gum rubber out-sole, which actually becomes more tacky and offers greater grip as it heats up in a short period of time.

Many indoor soccer shoes are based on their outdoor football equivalent. For example, there are some that are lighter than others for increased speed, whereas others are designed for great touch for overall better ball control.

Q. What should I look for when choosing an indoor football boot?

The answer to this will vary depending on the type of indoor soccer shoes that you are seeking. For example, you may be looking for a football shoe for greater court speed, or a football shoe for better ball control or passing accuracy. There will usually be several options in all styles at a variety of price points, but generally the high priced football shoes will have better durability, as they tend to be made with higher quality materials as well as including more features to help improve your game.

Q. What is the best way to ensure I choose the right sized boot if I buy them from Sportsmart’s online store?

All indoor soccer shoes will be a very similar fit to your everyday sports shoes. So, if you are size 10 US in a pair of runners, you will usually be a size 10 US in a pair of indoor soccer shoes. If for some reason the size isn’t right, call our online team on (03) 9091 5024 to arrange an exchange for another size.

Q. What brands of indoor football boots does Sportsmart stock?

Sportsmart stocks one of the largest ranges of indoor soccer shoes in Australia, featuring all models and colours from Nike, adidas and Diadora.

Q. What are the most popular models of indoor soccer boots right now?

Our best selling models at the moment are the new Nike Mercurial and Nike Magista X ranges, which both feature the Dynamic Fit Collar. There is also a variety of popular adidas styles, especially the classic adidas Mundial Goal.

Q. How do I best care for my indoor soccer boots to get more wear from them?

There isn’t a lot of maintenance required with indoor soccer shoes as they are not worn outdoors, and therefore don’t get wet or covered in mud. But we still advise that you regularly wipe them down with a damp cloth to help keep the upper clean, and make sure that the outsole is clean and free of dirt.

Q. Which indoor football boot is your personal favourite right now?

The new release models of Nike Mercurial & Magista X range are my favorite as they have plenty of technical features as well as some really modern styling.

Visit your local Sportsmart store for advice and fitting, or browse our indoor football shoe range online (free shipping on footwear!)

2015 WGC WORLD MATCH PLAY

Golf Manager, Michael Walsh

2015 WGC World Match Play, TPC Harding Park, San Francisco, 27 April- 3 May

With the Masters behind us, all eyes turn to San Francisco’s TPC Harding Park golf course for the 2015 World Match play. The top ranked 64 players in the world will do battle and the field will include the likes of Jordan Speith, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and defending Match play champion, Australia’s Jason Day.

This is a very unique tournament in the PGA calendar. There will be 3 days of four man groups playing this long San Francisco TPC course, which hosted the 2009 President’s Cup as well as being the site of the 2020 PGA Championship. It goes without saying that this course is no easy beat, even though it is a public golf course.

At the end of these 3 days, the top 16 players from each of these groups will go into the weekend Match play games. Players will be selected from 3 pools to make up the initial four man groups. The top 16 seeded players in the world plus one player from each of the other 3 pools.

  • Pool 1: Players seeded 17-32, Pool 2: 33-48, Pool 3: 49-64.

The current top 16 golf players are: 1.McIlroy, 2.Speith, 3.Stenson, 4.Bubba, 5.Day, 6.Johnson, 7.Scott, 8.Rose, 9.Garcia, 10.Furyk, 11.Walker, 12.Holmes, 13.Fowler, 14.Reed, 15.Matsuyama, 16.Kaymer.

This is the only PGA sanctioned Match play tournament for the year, and with the top players all showing up this year, it promises to be an event to remember. All players will be hoping to play well as the week after will see the Players Championship contested at the world renowned TPC Sawgrass.

This tournament has all the makings of a classic contest, and having played this golf course myself last year, I can tell you it’s long and the rough is absolutely brutal. Being on Lake Merced, there is also some water to contend with. The famous San Francisco weather, which, like Melbourne’s, is unpredictable, is sure to play a part.  All things considered, it should be very entertaining.

HOW TO MOULD YOUR MOUTHGUARD

One of our most popular blog posts has always been our guide to moulding mouthguards.

This is a guide only – it is important to carefully follow any specific instructions detailed in the leaflet included with your mouthguard purchase.

Using a mouthguard in contact sports – such as hockey, AFL, soccer, rugby and boxing – is very important, especially for junior players. A properly fitted mouthguard is essential for protection. The most popular type of mouthguard is the self-fit, which is heated and then formed to fit your mouth.

To mould a mouthguard:

1. Boil a small pot of water, then transfer the boiling water into a ceramic bowl.

2. Submerge the mouthguard for about 20 seconds. The mouthguard should have instructions for the correct amount of time. Remember, the mouthguard should be heated to the point that you are able to mould it, not the point where it starts to melt.

3. Remove the mouthguard from the water using a spoon or its fitting handle (if one was supplied). Do not squeeze as this may deform the mouthguard.

4. Cool the mouthguard either by dipping it in cool water or air-drying. Check your mouthguard instructions to see if water is recommended. You only need to cool the mouthguard to the point where you can put it in your mouth without burning yourself.

5. Place the mouthguard into your mouth to mould it. Push the mouthguard against your teeth with your fingers and bite down for about 30 seconds. Pull the guard tighter to your teeth by placing your tongue against the roof of your mouth and sucking the air and water out.

6. Now you need to cool the mouthguard. Some instructions advise that the guard is cooled rapidly after it has been fitted by dipping it in cold water, or by keeping it in the mouth while drinking some cool water.

* If the mouthguard does not fit properly, you can remould it by starting the process again.

Using a mouth-formed mouthguard is the easiest way to ensure the mouthguard fits perfectly to your mouth. Be sure to inspect your mouthguard frequently and replace it if it becomes deformed or you notice that the edges become jagged.

Sportsmart stocks a variety of mouthguards from Signature and Opro for both seniors and juniors.

Our Signature mouthguards are available in Type 1 (entry-level), Type 2 (available in club colours) and Type 3 (Vipa – includes a polycarbonate insert).

Our Opro range includes the Opro Junior, Opro Bronze, Opro Silver, Opro Gold and Opro Platinum, available in a variety of colours and in an Ortho option.

You can view our range of mouthguards online or visit a store to select the type that will best suit your sporting needs.

The 2015 field will include the very best golfers in the world, including the return to tournament play of former number one player Tiger Woods. Woods has had a rapid fall from the number one spot to now sit at 111. His short game has been under the microscope for months, but he has recently teamed with coach Hank Haney to fix this issue. He will be one to watch.

Young guns like Jordan Speith, Hideki Matsuyama and Brooks Koepka will be looking to make a splash in the field that includes living legends of the game like Tom Watson, Berhard Langer, Miguel Angel Jiminez, Fred Couples and Ben Crenshaw.

The green jacket is probably the most sought-after prize in golf. The Masters field is the smallest of all the Major Championships and this year includes 20 rookies. This will surely be a Masters to remember.

HOW TO CHOOSE A HOCKEY STICK

by Thomas Kilpatrick

Bat Sports Category Manager

Size

When choosing a hockey stick, it is important to get the right size.

A good rule of thumb is the hockey stick should sit from the ground to between your waist and your belly button.

This ‘rule’ may vary depending on your age and the position you play.

For example, a junior hockey player would fit to the belly button to allow more growing room. A defender would use a larger and heavier stick than a forward, because a defender wants a better reach, and a forward wants better control (which you get with a shorter hockey stick).

To look after your hockey stick, ensure you use a shaft guard to protect the head. This will help with contact from the ground or other players’ sticks.

Material

Hockey sticks can be made from different types of materials: wood, fibreglass, carbon fibre and aramid.

A basic hockey stick is made from wood, and has fibreglass reinforcement to lighten and strengthen the stick. Eg. Kookaburra Crush Junior $29.99, ideal for beginner players.

The next level of hockey stick is made mostly out of fibreglass with a bit of carbon fibre for extra power, and is lighter again for better performance. Eg. Grays GX E11 Standard Junior $59.99.

Grays GX E11 Standard Junior Maxi Hockey Stick 2015

Hockey stick prices can vary from $19.99 to $349.99; the more carbon and aramid, the better the stick. View our range of hockey sticks online, or in store.

Our Moorabbin store has some demo hockey sticks available, so you can try before you buy. Please visit us in store, or view our online shop, for all your hockey needs.
