Outwit and outplay

Basketball is a great team sport. Each player has to be in tune with their team-mates to outwit and outplay the opposing side. It is also such a fast-paced game, which certainly keeps the adrenalin pumping – whether you are a player or a spectator! When I played during secondary school, we didn’t make many finals, but getting on that court with my team-mates was always the highlight of my week.

Tiger, Tiger, Tiger

Like many fans, I am counting down to November when golfing legend Tiger Woods is coming to Melbourne for the Australian Masters. It has been more than a decade since Tiger last came to Melbourne to play in the President’s Cup in 1998, so it will be a momentous occasion. I am not an avid golfer – my handicap gives that fact away – but I enjoy playing with friends from time to time at my local course. Whether you enjoy it as a social game or a competition sport, golf really does have broad appeal.

Fit and fabulous

Keeping fit is so important to maintaining good health, and it’s even better when you enjoy it. Whether you exercise using weights or doing cardio (or both), getting your heart rate up for half an hour at least three times per week has many physical and mental benefits, from improving the condition of your heart and lungs to helping to improve self-confidence. While I enjoy a weights and cardio program at my local gym, I also like to run at the parks in my local area to change things up a bit.

Anyone for tennis?

Wimbledon is one of my favourite tennis tournaments of the year – I always have a few late nights watching the best players in the world fight it out on court. I enjoy the combination of skill and strategy, and this also makes it a great sport to play. I like racking up a few games with friends and family on our local tennis courts – though it is slightly discouraging watching the children being coached on the nearby courts, because they tend to have a better forehand than me!

Bring on the Ashes

At this time every four years I am getting excited about the Ashes Series. There is something so appealing about the sport of cricket – both watching it and playing. While I am a batsman, one of my most admired players was Adam Gilchrist. I love the roller coaster of emotions that comes with following a test match, the history of the game and the legends who have made it what it is today. But, mostly, I like the special place it holds as part of our national culture.

Soccer for everyone

I am a big fan of soccer, though I’m much better at watching it than playing. It is such an international sport, and passions run deep. I went to Africa two years ago, and the people there – particularly the children – loved to play and follow their favourite teams (though I did notice that Arsenal supporters far outnumbered supporters for my favourite team, Chelsea, in the English Premier League!) Those playing competition soccer locally are approaching a critical time of the season, so good luck to all teams – and remember that playing your best and enjoying the game is what counts.

Mid-season musings

I love the middle of the footy season. The days are cold but there is nothing more comforting than turning on the TV to watch your team (the Bulldogs in my case) battle it out on the ground. Even better is rugging up and going to the game – whether it is the big league or the local footy. I play on Saturdays and thrive on the team spirit, the spectator support and just playing at my hardest. There’s definitely something special about making the finals, but the main thing is just getting out there and giving it your all every week.
