Mesut Özil Q&A and the adidas ACE 16+ Pure Control

Ozil is among the first to wear the adidas Ace 16+ Pure Control
How is the premier league different to the Bundesliga?
The Premier League is a lot faster and a lot more physical. You don’t have as much time on the ball so it’s crucial to make early decisions. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and to boss the game on a stage like this you need to be on top form every week.
How do you prepare for a game? Do you have any rituals or superstitions?
I always used to have the same ritual before every game where I make only knots with the laces instead of tying them in the traditional way, and then tuck them in. I think that if you tie your laces in the traditional way it’s harder to control the ball as the surface area is not flat. That’s why I’m so excited for the ACE 16+ Pure Control and having a laceless surface, though I will need a new pre-match routine now!
What did you think when you first saw the ACE 16+ Pure Control?
Honestly? I was so excited. I’ve tried my whole career to minimise the impact of laces on my game. To have a laceless boot is a dream come true.
You’ve already reached double figures when it comes to assists this season, how does it feel to be bossing the game right now?
It’s a really great feeling knowing I’m contributing to the team. It’s easy to boss the game when you’re playing with so many great players and my aim now is to break the record for the most assists in a Premier League season.
We know you boss the game on the pitch but we also know you love cars. What do you drive to boss the road?
I’m a big lover of cars and it’s one of the few luxuries I enjoy spending my money on. Right now you’d find me behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz G-Class. It’s a really awesome car.
We know music is a big part of your life, who do you think bosses the stage?
I’ll listen to music before every match to get myself psyched up and right now I’m really into my Hip Hop. It’s hard to say who is the biggest boss in hip hop, as it’s a genre full of incredible performers. But if I could choose my ideal gig it would be kicked off by Kanye West – currently my favourite artist – followed by Wiz Khalifa and finished by Drake.
It’s no secret that you’re into fashion and have a particular post-match grooming routine. Can you shed some light on this?
I like to take care of myself and take pride in my appearance. Football players like to take care of themselves and pay attention to the way they dress. I think as a human being you need variety; you can’t just do football, you need a combination. Football is of course my main focus, which is a lot of fun and I love to be on the pitch. But I have other interests beside that, like fashion or being with my family. I am a big sneaker fan and adidas has a lot to offer there.
What’s been your footballing highlight to date?
That’s a really difficult question to answer. Winning two FA Cups with my club has been fantastic as it’s something our fans waited eight years for. But the ultimate highlight has to be lifting the World Cup with Germany. There was real expectation around us before the tournament and we stepped up and delivered, including a huge performance against Brazil. It was incredible to walk off the pitch with my team mates knowing that the world would be talking about that game for a long time.
The world’s first high performance laceless boot – the ACE 16+ Pure Control – will be available in a VERY limited number at Sportsmart’s Moorabbin store soon.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT GOLF PUTTER
by Josh Cassap, Golf Manager
Some tips on choosing the right golf putter:
1. Length: Perhaps the most important component to a putter. To test length, firstly get into a correct address position. When tilting from your hips, you want your eyes over the ball and hands under your shoulders. If you grip a “standard” length putter and find you’re gripping down the shaft, you will need a shorter putter. If you grip beyond the end of the putter shaft, you will need a longer putter.
2. Weight: If you find you need a shorter putter, just cutting your putter shaft will do you no good. The putter is built to be a certain swing weight at a certain length. Cutting it down will also make the swing weight go down and it will feel too light in your hands. So you need to buy a golf putter that has the proper weight. A 35″ putter usually has a head weight of 330 grams. If you need a 34″ putter, you need to look at having 350- to 360-gram head weight. If you need a shorter putter of 32″ to 33,” you need to look at having a 370- to 380-gram head weight.
3. Balance Point: There are basically two types of putter head: face-balanced and toe-balanced. If you lay the shaft in your hand with the shaft parallel to the ground and the face is facing the sky, you have a face-balanced putter. If the toe is hanging toward the ground, you have a toe-balanced putter. If you want a square-to-square stroke (which means the putter face is always square to the target and the stroke is straight back and through), you would benefit with a face-balanced putter. If you want to be have an arc stroke (which means the putter face will open and closed relative to the target and the stroke travels on a slight curve), you would benefit from a toe-balanced putter.
4. Head Design: This is where it becomes a little more player preference. Putter heads come in all different shapes and sizes, but it really boils down to whether you prefer a mallet head or more of a blade head. Do you prefer a sight line or none? If you prefer a square putting style with a face-balanced putter, you may benefit from a mallet head with sight line. If you are an arc putter, you may benefit from a blade putter with no sight line.
It is very important to pick a golf putter suited to your style of stroke. Becoming a good putter can lower your score dramatically, or save that round when you’re not hitting well!
We have a great range of putters in stock, so visit us at our Moorabbin store for advice and to get a fitting.

US PGA 2015 Championship
The PGA championship is the last of the 2015 season’s major tournaments. To the winner goes the security of 5 years entry into the PGA and other major tournament events as well as the Players Championship, the European tour, and the PGA championship for life. With the total prize purse of $10 million, it is also the richest of the majors.
Qualification into the PGA Championship is reserved for members of the PGA. Each year 20 of the 156 places in the field are taken by club professionals. The Club Pro Championship is run in June and this determines those 20 spots. Although the top players are invited to compete, the places are also taken by: All former PGA Champions, Winners of the last 5 US Opens, Masters and Open Championships and The last senior PGA Champion. As well as the top 70 on the money earning list, the Ryder Cup Team members (Top 100 only) the low 15 scorers in the last PGA Championship. If this does not make up the 156 places, then the next money earners outside the top 70 will be invited. As a 4 time winner of the PGA, Tiger Woods will be playing, and by all reports, Rory will be as well. It remains to be seen if he is fully fit though.
The course it will be played on is The Straits course at Whistling Straits, Kohler, Wisconsin. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, this links looking, but not playing, course has hosted this tournament twice before. In 2010, Martin Kaymer fought off Bubba Watson in a 3 hole playoff that secured the German his first major. In 2004 it was Fijian Vijay Singh who beat Chris Demarco and Justin Leonard in a playoff too. This course has a habit of keeping players very honest in terms of score. Although it does have the look of a links course, there is a lot of water and unlike this years’ US Open, the greens at Whistling Straits will hold the incoming shot and make for a better spectacle.
The course has over 500 bunkers and 14 water hazards, the mounds and berms are largely left uncut, but the 22 acres of fairway is surrounded by over 150 acres of rough, the deep rough being a brutal mixture of four grasses. You will see bluffs and huge sand dune areas, holes that hug the Lake Michigan shoreline, four stone bridges and large elevation changes while watching this tournament. It is visually stunning.
8 Australians have qualified so far: Steven Bowditch, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Cameron Smith, John Senden, Geoff Ogilvy, Matt Jones and Jason Day. Hopefully, one of them can take it out. It would be the first Australian to do so since Steve Elkington back in 1995 at Riviera.

by Golf Manager, Mic Walsh
The Callaway Golf Company was founded by Ely Callaway Jnr in 1983. Callaway is responsible for a great deal of the modern club shape and design. The iconic ‘Big Bertha’ was the club that started the revolution in drivers, and was even referred to as a substitute for the name ‘driver’ throughout much of the 90s.
Callaway Golf has been at the forefront of design and innovation from its beginnings. Callaway spends more than $100 million yearly on research and development, and owns the majority of all advances in golf. Callaway is responsible for clubs like the ‘Big Bertha’, the ‘2 Ball’ putter, the soft insert putter, the ‘bore through hosel’ design, and the low drag dimple patterned golf ball, developed by using technology that belonged to Boeing.
Located in Carlsbad California, Callaway is the largest producer of golf equipment worldwide, as well as one of the finest. The detail, technology and performance of the Callaway brand makes it sought after by all types of golfers. Although it produces some of the most forgiving clubs on the market, in recent times Callaway has also produced some of the best performance models too.
Good news for golfers in Australia: Callaway has a huge presence here. The Callaway Fit Centre in Rowville is on the cutting edge of club fitting and is available to be used by Sportsmart Golf customers through a referral from our staff. The new range of Callaway equipment is being used by many players on tour and is available in store now. New big hitters like Jason Kokrak and Tony Finau have also proven to people just how long the technology can be; both players average over 275 metres per drive.
