DONATE YOUR PRE LOVED FOOTBALL BOOTS TO A GREAT CAUSE!

Sportsmart is working with the Reagan Milstein Foundation to collect pre loved football boots. The Reagan Milstein Foundation collects pre-loved football boots and passes them on to children who cannot afford to buy boots.

These children can sometimes be in communities as far away as Tonga or Cambodia or as close as Northern Territory or Dandenong, depending on the need at the time.

They also collect unused and unwanted sporting uniforms so if your club has boxes of left over gear in its garage they are happy to take it off your hands. None of these items are resold.

The donations bin is located in our footwear department at Sportsmart Moorabbin. If you have any boots or gear you don’t wear anymore, bring them down as your donations will help those in need.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPORTSMANSHIP

Sportsmanship is the rules and ethics of being a team player when participating in an athletic event. Sportsmanship emphasizes the fact that teammates and opposing players should act in a civilised manner. The rules of sportsmanship emphasize playing the game well without having a negative attitude or resorting to negative actions.

Teams are taught to have a respect and appreciation for the rules of the game. Athletes must play by the rules and must not be tempted to cheat to win the game. Teams should also ensure that do not treat the opposing team in a negative or degrading manner. Players must avoid name calling and using unsportsmanlike conduct such as unnecessary pushing or shoving.

Good sportsmanship teaches players to support their teammates. Instead of bashing a player when he has made a poor decision in the game, a teammate with good sportsmanship tells the player not to worry and that they will have better luck next time. Players with good sportsmanship who lose are sure to congratulate the winning team on a tough but well earned game.

It is important to emphasize that winning isn’t everything. Teams that understand playing the game well and to the best of their ability are more important will have a better experience. The concept that winning isn’t everything will help prevent athletes from feeling tempted to cheat or play dirty. The aspect of sportsmanship is very important for young children when playing on their first teams.

HOW TO INCREASE THE MEMBERS OF YOUR CLUB

Sports clubs are facing many challenges including recruiting new members, retaining existing members, growing sponsorship revenue etc. which they need to overcome in order to survive. This guide will assist you in gaining a greater understanding in how to promote your club and recruit new members.

All sporting clubs need to undertake in some form of marketing. This may include listing your club on a website, placing information about membership registrations in the local newspapers, offering discounts or even redecorating club facilities. In this day and age it is important for clubs to differentiate themselves in order to stand out from the rest. This basically means finding something that your club does which is different from other clubs i.e. promoting a positive and inclusive social atmosphere, high emphasis on team spirit etc.

You may choose to have a few marketing messages in place to target different audiences such as families: family friendly clubs with a playground, juniors: play with your school friends or seniors: meet new people and enjoy the social atmosphere after the game.

There are a variety of ways in which you can actively promote your club. Active promotion can be the most powerful promotional method in recruiting new members. It involves engaging people to participate in activities so that they can gain a greater understanding of the sport and club.

Active promotion is most effective in the following two ways:

  • Inviting people to a club event: Host an open day at the start of the season, this will engage both potential and existing club members by providing free coaching, games and activities. Base the day around fun, encourage old players to bring a friend and consider offering an ‘early bird special’ for members that sign up on that day.
  • Organise a corporate event involving local businesses. Encourage those that work full time to get active in your sport and modify the rules if need be.
